Experience in liver-kidney transplantation in children

This webinar will be on March 10, 2026 (16:00 CET)

This webinar will focus on combined liver–kidney transplantation (CLKT) in children, including indications, surgical strategies, and outcomes. It will explore both simultaneous and sequential approaches, emphasizing the unique challenges and considerations in pediatric patients. The session will also present 25 years of clinical experience from a specialized center, highlighting patient selection, multidisciplinary care, and long-term results.

Speakers: Dr. Maria Mercadal-Hally, Paediatric hepatologist. Paediatric hepatology and liver transplantation Department. Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Barcelona (Spain).

Learning outcomes:

Understanding of Pediatric CLKT Indications

  • Identify and explain the main congenital conditions leading to CLKT in children.
  • Recognize early diagnostic signs that may prompt consideration for dual-organ transplantation.

Knowledge of Surgical Approaches and Clinical Decision-Making

  • Compare and contrast simultaneous vs. sequential CLKT procedures.
  • Understand the implications of organ availability, disease progression, and perioperative management in procedural planning.
  • Appreciate the role of multidisciplinary teams (hepatology, nephrology, surgery, anesthesia, intensive care, etc.) in the management of CLKT patients.

Application of Hospital-Based Evidence to Broader Clinical Practice

    • Translate institutional experience and data into practical guidelines or considerations for other transplant centers.
